Lake Placid from Whiteface Mountain by Amy Chapuk

The world-famous, picturesque mountain village of Lake Placid, nestled in the scenic High Peaks of the Adirondacks on the shores of beautiful Mirror Lake, is the proud site of legendary gold medal performances in two Winter Olympics.  The Lake Placid / Wilmington region still offers year-round activities at the Olympic venues.  Hike in the highest peaks and vast pristine forests of the Adirondacks, or take your canoe and fishing pole to numerous ponds, lakes, and rivers.  Go boating on Lake Placid, Lake Champlain, or Schroon Lake.
Take a ghost-hunter tour at Fort Ticonderoga or a guided raft tour through Ausable Chasm.  Enjoy the beautiful fall foliage at the Adirondack Marathon Festival (Schroon Lake Sept. 25-26), the Whiteface Mountain Oktoberfest (Oct. 2-3), and the Flaming Leaves Festival (Olympic Jumping Complex Oct. 9-10).  Essex County offers many more seasonal and year-round recreational and cultural activities (scenic slide show).
